Osteoarthritis is highly prevalent in older cats but frequently underdiagnosed; effective pain management significantly improves quality of life.
Arthritic cats may stop jumping, become reluctant to use stairs or litter trays, groom less effectively, and sleep in different locations. These subtle signs are often attributed to "old age" rather than treatable pain. Untreated chronic pain significantly impairs quality of life and can lead to secondary problems including muscle loss, obesity, and behavioural changes. Treatment with appropriate analgesia, environmental modification (ramps, lower-sided litter trays, raised food bowls), and weight management can transform the daily experience of an arthritic cat.
