Bumblebee populations are declining worldwide due to habitat loss, pesticide exposure, and climate change, raising both ecological and welfare concerns.
The welfare significance of bumblebee decline encompasses both the individual suffering of pesticide-impaired colonies and the systemic loss of wild populations. Neonicotinoid-exposed bumblebees show impaired cognition, reduced foraging success, and disrupted navigation — indicators of welfare harm at the individual level. At the population level, colony collapse driven by starvation or disease causes mass mortality. Ethical consideration of bumblebee welfare remains emerging but is supported by neurological research suggesting bees have capacity for primitive affective states. Their decline also threatens ecosystem services underpinning food production and wild plant diversity.
