Obesity is one of the most prevalent welfare problems in companion animals, with over half of dogs and cats in some countries clinically overweight.
Obesity causes chronic physical discomfort, reduced mobility, heat intolerance, and reduced quality and quantity of life. It is largely a preventable condition driven by overfeeding and insufficient exercise, yet many owners underestimate its impact. The emotional dimensions of feeding — using food as a reward or expression of love — complicate owner behaviour change. Veterinary nurses play a key role in weight clinics that provide regular monitoring, dietary advice, and owner support. Successful weight loss must be gradual and paired with increased appropriate exercise.
