Welfare Considerations

Dogs with noise phobia experience genuine fear and panic responses that cause significant acute suffering. Bonfire Night, New Year, and other celebratory periods that involve fireworks can be severely distressing. Without intervention, phobia often worsens each year. Desensitisation using recordings of firework sounds, conducted systematically outside the firework season, can reduce sensitivity. Medication including anxiolytics (dexmedetomidine oromucosal gel in the EU) and pheromone products (Adaptil) reduce arousal. Long-term treatment with SSRIs and systematic desensitisation addresses the underlying phobia most effectively.
