Welfare Considerations

High stocking densities, while economically motivated, increase stress and aggressive behaviour. Handling during grading and harvest causes acute stress and injury. Humane slaughter using CO2 narcosis or ice slurry is practiced in some markets but not universally. Consumer demand for ASC-certified tilapia creates market incentives for improved production standards, though welfare requirements in certification remain less developed than environmental ones.
