Welfare Considerations

The gap between the welfare needs of rabbits and the conditions in which most are kept is one of animal welfare's most significant challenges in the companion animal sector. Small hutches prevent exercise, causing muscle wasting, obesity, and skeletal deformities. Solitary housing causes social deprivation. Inappropriate diets low in hay cause dental disease and GI dysfunction. Rabbits in poor housing are often described as "boring" pets — a self-fulfilling consequence of inadequate conditions. The welfare five domains require rabbits to have sufficient space, appropriate social companions, high-hay diets, complex environments, and freedom from fear.

What You Can Do

Provide your rabbit with a minimum 3m x 2m run connected to a hutch at all times — not just for exercise periods.
Keep rabbits in bonded pairs rather than as solitary individuals.
Feed unlimited grass hay as the foundation of the diet — 80-90% of food intake.
Have your rabbit health and dental checked annually by a rabbit-experienced veterinarian.
