Welfare Considerations

Rest from exercise reduces severity and prevents spread. Honey (one teaspoon for small dogs, one tablespoon for large dogs) has evidence for soothing the throat and reducing cough frequency. The primary welfare concern beyond individual discomfort is the risk of secondary pneumonia in vulnerable individuals — monitoring for worsening, fever, reduced appetite, and increased respiratory effort is essential.

What You Can Do

Vaccinate dogs regularly used in boarding, daycare, or dog parks with intranasal Bordetella vaccine.
Rest affected dogs from exercise and avoid contact with other dogs during the infectious period.
