Welfare Considerations

Thermal delousing (using warm water in a closed system) achieves good lice reduction but causes mortality in a proportion of fish from stress or scale damage. Laser treatment causes minimal handling stress but has lower efficacy at high lice burdens. Integrated pest management combining multiple approaches, robust monitoring, and fallowing of sites offers the best welfare and environmental outcomes.
