Welfare Considerations

Basking adders mistaken for a threat to humans or pets are frequently killed — an illegal act causing acute welfare harm. Adders are not aggressive; bites to humans typically occur when animals are accidentally trodden on or deliberately handled. In rehabilitation, bite victims (including dogs) require veterinary antivenom; the snake itself rarely requires treatment after encounters. Maintaining connectivity between heathland patches through scrub management supports population genetic diversity and individual welfare through reduced inbreeding.
