Welfare Considerations

Dogs with pneumonia face more significant welfare compromise: high fever, laboured breathing, and the distress of hospitalised supportive care. The highly contagious nature of CIV means outbreaks in kennels, doggy daycares, and shelters cause widespread welfare impact simultaneously. Isolation of affected animals, supportive care with fluids and NSAIDs, and antibiotic treatment for secondary bacterial infections are the management cornerstones. Rest and reduced activity during recovery protect respiratory welfare.

What You Can Do

Vaccinate dogs regularly attending kennels, doggy daycare, or dog shows against CIV strains in your region.
Isolate any dog showing respiratory signs from other dogs immediately.
Seek veterinary assessment for dogs with severe cough, high fever, or difficulty breathing.
