Urban foxes (Vulpes vulpes) thrive in cities but face unique welfare threats including mange, road traffic, and illegal persecution that require community-level solutions.
Urban foxes face a complex welfare landscape: mange epidemics cause intense suffering and eventual death from dehydration and starvation; road trauma causes acute injury and mortality; and illegal snaring and poisoning occur even in urban areas. However, urban foxes also benefit from reduced predation risk and abundant food resources. Welfare interventions include community mange treatment programmes (using Frontline-medicated bread balls distributed to foxes in affected areas), veterinary triage for injured foxes, and public education about coexistence. The National Fox Welfare Society and RSPCA provide treatment guidance. Lethal control is generally considered ineffective and unnecessary given rapid recolonisation.
