Chimpanzees have complex, fission-fusion social structures that are difficult to replicate in captivity, and poor group management causes significant welfare problems.
Chimpanzee welfare in captivity is fundamentally constrained by the impossibility of replicating wild fission-fusion social dynamics in fixed groups. Captive chimps may be chronically exposed to incompatible group members they cannot avoid, causing chronic social stress, anxiety, and physical injury. High-ranking individuals may monopolise resources and harass subordinates without escape routes. Welfare improvement strategies include: larger multi-room facilities allowing separation without isolation, carefully managed introductions using olfactory familiarisation, providing choice and control over social contact, and enrichment that distributes food-related resource competition. Behavioural welfare assessment using validated indicators (CHIMP, RZSS welfare protocols) enables systematic identification of individuals experiencing poor welfare.
