Mountain gorillas have recovered from fewer than 300 individuals but ongoing welfare threats from habitat pressure and disease exposure require continued vigilance.
Mountain gorilla welfare is sustained by one of the most intensive conservation efforts in wildlife management. Tourism that brings humans into gorilla proximity provides funding but also disease risk — gorillas have died from respiratory illnesses transmitted by tourists and rangers. Snares set for other animals frequently injure gorillas who require veterinary intervention. The welfare of rangers who protect gorillas in conflict zones is inseparable from gorilla welfare — without dedicated, protected rangers, gorilla populations cannot be maintained.
