Handling time is minimised to reduce stress; chicks are placed gently in sacking to prevent injury. Body temperature monitoring ensures chicks are not chilled during handling, particularly on cold days. Nest disturbance causes temporary parental absence; visits are timed to warm parts of the day to prevent chick chilling. Adult ospreys rarely abandon chicks due to nest visits if disturbance is brief. The conservation data gained from ringing — enabling tracking of individual lifetime fitness and population trends — is considered to justify the minimal acute welfare cost to individual birds.
