Immune-mediated thrombocytopenia (IMT) is a serious autoimmune condition in dogs where the immune system destroys platelets, causing dangerous bleeding disorders requiring prompt veterinary intervention.
IMT causes significant welfare suffering through the risk of life-threatening haemorrhage, the discomfort of bruising and mucosal bleeding, and the side effects of high-dose corticosteroid therapy including increased thirst, hunger, and urination. Dogs in the acute phase may be lethargic and distressed. Early recognition is critical to prevent spontaneous internal bleeding. Long-term welfare management involves careful tapering of immunosuppression while monitoring for relapse through regular blood counts, minimising both disease and treatment burdens.
