Pig Sow Body Condition Scoring and Welfare

Body condition scoring in sows is a key welfare and productivity tool, helping farmers prevent both obesity and underweight conditions that cause significant health problems throughout the reproductive cycle.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Poor body condition in sows is both a welfare indicator and a cause of further welfare problems. Thin sows experience metabolic stress, reduced immune function, and impaired mothering ability. Obese sows suffer joint pain, cardiovascular strain, and difficult farrowings including prolonged labour that harms both sow and piglets. Regular BCS monitoring — weekly for sows in late pregnancy — enables timely dietary adjustments. Adequate feeder space, electronic sow feeders, and management of social hierarchies in group housing systems are important for ensuring all sows access adequate nutrition.
