Rainbow trout experience welfare challenges at multiple points in the production cycle: during grading and sorting, vaccination, transport, and slaughter. High stocking densities lead to fin damage, chronic stress, and competition for resources. Water quality failures — particularly low oxygen or high ammonia levels — cause acute suffering. The slaughter process is a major welfare concern: electrical or CO2 stunning followed by ice slurry immersion without prior stunning are common but associated with significant consciousness and distress. Humane slaughter certification schemes for fish are increasing awareness and raising practice standards in the industry.
