African greys kept in inadequate conditions suffer profoundly. These are not behavioural quirks but indicators of serious psychological distress in a highly intelligent being. Meeting the needs of an African grey requires a substantial daily time commitment for interaction, foraging enrichment, puzzle feeding, and social engagement. Many African greys in captivity live lives of chronic frustration and boredom. The ethics of keeping such cognitively sophisticated animals as pets is a subject of increasing debate.
