Dog Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: Complex Autoimmune Disease

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in dogs is a complex autoimmune condition affecting multiple organ systems simultaneously, making diagnosis and management particularly challenging.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

SLE causes multisystemic suffering that can be difficult to fully control. Dogs with active disease experience joint pain causing reluctance to move, skin discomfort from ulcerative lesions, malaise from anaemia, and the side effects of prolonged immunosuppression. The waxing and waning nature of the disease means welfare fluctuates considerably, with good quality of life during remission and significant suffering during flares. Regular monitoring of blood work, urinalysis, and joint comfort allows early intervention during flares. Owner education about recognising the signs of relapse is critical for timely veterinary intervention and reducing the duration of active disease.
