Chronic ear infections are among the most common and welfare-impairing conditions in dogs, causing pain, disturbed sleep, and frustration, often driven by underlying allergic disease that must be addressed.
Chronic ear disease causes persistent pain and distress that significantly impairs dog welfare and owner quality of life. Dogs with active ear infections shake their heads repeatedly — often through the night — experience pain on jaw movements (affecting eating), and resist handling around the head and ears. Many dogs with chronic otitis have had recurrent infections treated repeatedly without identification of the underlying primary cause. Investigating and treating underlying allergic disease — food allergy or environmental allergy — is the only sustainable management approach for chronic cases. Treating infections without addressing the underlying cause results in repeated recurrence, prolonged suffering, and eventual canal scarring that may require surgical intervention.
