Vixens naturally leave cubs alone during daylight hours — healthy cubs found alone are not necessarily abandoned. Unnecessary handling transfers human scent and may cause maternal abandonment. Dogs accessing fox earths causes acute terror responses in cubs and vixens, and can cause direct injury. Garden clearance and strimming that destroys natal earths forces vixens to move dependent cubs in ways that increase exposure and mortality risk. Spring awareness about fox cub vulnerability and appropriate non-intervention is a significant wildlife welfare communication need.
