Sweet itch — severe pruritic dermatitis caused by allergic reaction to Culicoides midge bites — is one of the most distressing chronic skin conditions in horses, causing intense suffering and self-inflicted injury.

Welfare Considerations

Sweet itch causes severe, relentless welfare suffering during the spring and summer midge season. Affected horses are unable to stop rubbing affected areas — the itch is overwhelming and drives self-mutilation that causes open wounds and secondary infection. Horses may stay up all night rubbing, lose condition from the chronic irritation, and become dangerous to handle due to distress. The condition worsens with each season as sensitisation accumulates. Management requires high owner commitment — fitting and removing sweet itch rugs daily, adjusting stabling patterns, and applying topical treatments — but can substantially reduce suffering when consistently applied. Providing immediate relief during acute episodes through appropriate medication reduces the most severe welfare harm.

What You Can Do

Use a well-fitting sweet itch rug covering the belly, neck, and poll — daily consistent use from March to October is required for effective prevention
Stable sweet itch horses between 4-9 AM and 4-11 PM during peak Culicoides midge activity periods
Apply repellent preparations containing DEET or benzyl benzoate to exposed skin areas not covered by the rug
Discuss systemic antihistamine or corticosteroid use with your vet for severe episodes where the horse cannot be kept comfortable by topical measures alone
