Dog Pancreatitis Dietary Management and Prevention

Canine pancreatitis is one of the most painful abdominal emergencies in dogs, and dietary management is central to both acute treatment and long-term prevention of recurrence.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Pancreatitis causes severe abdominal pain — affected dogs adopt a characteristic prayer position (front end down, rear end raised) to reduce abdominal pressure. The acute episode involves vomiting, anorexia, and prostration that significantly compromises welfare. Adequate analgesia (opioids during hospitalisation, NSAIDs where safe for long-term management) is essential for welfare during and after acute episodes. The long-term welfare burden is the dietary restriction required to prevent recurrence — dogs that love food and treats must be managed on strict low-fat diets indefinitely. Owners must resist the temptation to provide high-fat treats, as each pancreatitis episode causes additional pancreatic tissue destruction that worsens the underlying condition.
