Wolverines depend on deep spring snowpack for denning and raising young, making them one of the most directly climate-vulnerable large carnivores in North America.
Wolverine welfare under climate change involves a direct threat to reproduction — females that cannot find adequate snowpack for denning cannot successfully raise young. Kits born in dens that melt too early die from exposure. Adults living in progressively warmer mountain environments face food stress as the prey base shifts. The isolation of wolverine populations in mountain archipelagoes means that climate-driven local extirpation cannot be naturally reversed through recolonization. Wolverine welfare and conservation require both climate action and connectivity restoration.
