Free farrowing pen design is a welfare engineering challenge — the pen must allow sows to express natural nesting and maternal behaviour while maintaining adequate protection for neonatal piglets. Early designs produced higher crushing rates than crates; improved designs with elevated heating creep areas (piglet-attractive zones away from the sow), better sized pens, and appropriate flooring materials have significantly reduced this concern. The welfare trade-off between sow freedom of movement and piglet survival reflects a genuine tension in pig welfare — optimising for sow welfare cannot come at the cost of preventable piglet deaths. Commercial adoption of well-designed free farrowing systems, combined with farmer training in recognising and responding to at-risk situations, can achieve both goals simultaneously.
