Welfare Considerations

Many ferret welfare problems stem from inadequate space, inappropriate diet, and lack of social companionship. Ferrets kept alone without enrichment show signs of depression and stereotypic behavior. The practice of early spay/neuter in the US, while preventing certain problems, increases rates of adrenal disease — a significant welfare tradeoff under ongoing study.

What You Can Do

Ensure ferrets have large multi-level enclosures and several hours of supervised playtime daily
Feed species-appropriate high-protein diets rather than grain-heavy kibble
Keep ferrets in pairs or groups to meet social needs
