Immune-mediated polyarthritis (IMPA) causes painful joint inflammation in multiple joints simultaneously, requiring immunosuppressive treatment and welfare-focused monitoring.
IMPA causes diffuse joint pain that severely impairs mobility and quality of life. Affected dogs may be unable to rise, walk normally, or engage in any physical activity without pain. Fever compounds the systemic illness. Response to corticosteroids is typically rapid and dramatic, but side effects of high-dose immunosuppression including increased thirst, urination, appetite changes, and susceptibility to infection require monitoring. The risk of relapse during dose reduction is significant, and owners need to recognise early signs of recurrence. Long-term quality of life monitoring with regular owner assessment and veterinary examination guides treatment intensity.
