Feline inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) causes chronic gastrointestinal dysfunction with significant welfare impacts, requiring careful dietary and medical management.
IBD causes chronic gastrointestinal discomfort and nutritional depletion that progressively compromises welfare. Cats with uncontrolled IBD experience repeated vomiting, diarrhoea, and the malaise of chronic inflammation and weight loss. The distinction between IBD and small cell lymphoma (SCL) is critical — both are treated with similar protocols but SCL carries a different long-term prognosis. Response to dietary management alone in some cats avoids the need for immunosuppressive medication with its associated side effects. Monitoring weight, body condition, and vomiting frequency provides objective welfare tracking for cats with IBD on management programmes.
