Flamingo welfare is closely tied to group size — birds in small groups show stress behaviors, reproductive failure, and increased aggression. Many older zoo collections house fewer than 10 birds, far below welfare thresholds. Foot health is a major concern, as inappropriate substrate causes bumblefoot. Feeding enrichment is essential since flamingos in the wild spend up to 12 hours daily filter-feeding.
