Outdoor pig rearing provides welfare conditions fundamentally superior to indoor intensive systems for satisfying natural behaviour. Pigs with access to soil, mud, and natural foraging opportunities demonstrate lower levels of aggression, fewer stereotypic behaviours, and better overall welfare indicators than intensively housed counterparts. The ability to root and wallow meets motivated behaviours that cannot be satisfied in confinement. Welfare challenges do exist — heat stress in summer, cold exposure in winter, and predation — but these can be managed through appropriate shelter, shade, and predator protection. The welfare advantages of outdoor rearing are sufficiently consistent that premium welfare certification schemes invariably include outdoor access as a core standard.
