Nose-ringing creates an inherent conflict between animal welfare and environmental management. Rooting is not a minor behaviour preference but a deeply motivated activity pigs engage in for many hours daily. Preventing it through painful aversion causes measurable welfare harm. Ringed pigs show frustration behaviours and redirected rooting attempts. Alternative approaches including rotational grazing, enrichment with root vegetables, and dedicated wallow or digging areas can reduce pasture damage while preserving welfare to a greater degree.
