FIV-positive cats have a better prognosis than historically believed, and with appropriate management many can enjoy good quality of life for years after diagnosis.
The welfare implications of FIV diagnosis are substantially better than historically appreciated. Cats diagnosed with FIV that receive appropriate management including indoor housing, stress reduction, regular veterinary care, and prompt treatment of secondary infections can enjoy extended periods of good quality of life. The progressive immune decline that characterises advanced FIV disease is typically slow, and symptomatic phases may be treatable. Owners of FIV-positive cats should be supported in providing excellent welfare rather than being counselled toward premature euthanasia based on diagnosis alone.
