Hepatic lipidosis in anorexic cats requires prompt nutritional intervention through tube feeding, and oesophagostomy tubes enable home feeding that dramatically improves welfare outcomes.
Hepatic lipidosis causes progressive debilitation from liver failure in a condition that is largely reversible with prompt nutritional support. Cats with established lipidosis are profoundly unwell and require intensive care. Oesophagostomy tube placement, while requiring a brief anaesthetic, enables home tube feeding that allows cats to recover in familiar surroundings with their owners rather than extended hospitalisation. This approach is both more welfare-positive for the cat through familiar environment care and more effective in many cases through consistent owner-administered nutrition. The welfare outcome is dramatically better with early tube feeding intervention than with conservative management.
