Non-human primates are cognitively complex, highly social animals for whom laboratory environments create chronic stress, social deprivation, and in some cases profound psychological harm. Many species used in research — marmosets, macaques, baboons — demonstrate self-awareness, long-term memory, complex social bonds, and emotional responses comparable to children. The case for investing in non-animal and non-primate alternatives is both ethical and scientific, as species differences limit translatability to human medicine in any case.
