Designing the home environment to support secure independence in dogs reduces the risk of separation anxiety and improves welfare for dogs that must spend time alone.
Environmental design for separation anxiety prevention and management is an often overlooked welfare tool. A dog that has a comfortable, familiarly scented refuge associated with positive calm experiences is better equipped to manage alone time than one that has no secure home base. Predictable departure and return routines reduce the anticipatory anxiety that peaks as dogs learn owner departure cues. Environmental enrichment including long-lasting chews and food puzzles provides engaging activity during alone time. These environmental interventions are most effective when established before anxiety develops but also contribute to management of established separation anxiety alongside behavioural and medical treatment.
