Water shrews are semi-aquatic insectivores dependent on clean, vegetated waterways and are indicators of riparian habitat quality.
Water shrews are highly stressed by capture and handling; intensive monitoring must balance conservation need with individual welfare. Trapping must use appropriately sized traps, short check intervals, and bedding material to prevent hypothermia. Habitat quality monitoring — tracking invertebrate diversity and water quality — may be a lower-welfare-impact indicator of shrew population status than direct trapping.
