Environmental modifications can reduce the welfare impact of separation anxiety in dogs before and during veterinary and behavioural treatment.
Separation anxiety causes genuine distress — physiological stress responses, self-injury, and severe panic episodes. Environmental modifications reduce distress but do not resolve the underlying anxiety. They are most valuable as part of a comprehensive plan including gradual departure training and, where indicated, anxiolytic medication. Owners benefit from clear guidance that environmental management is supportive, not curative.
