Megacolon is a severe chronic condition in cats causing painful constipation. Early management of predisposing factors can prevent progression to irreversible colonic dysfunction.
Chronic constipation and megacolon cause significant, ongoing discomfort. Cats may strain unproductively, lose appetite, and develop secondary complications including vomiting and abdominal pain. Without treatment, colonic impaction progresses to life-threatening obstruction. Surgical intervention, while effective, is major surgery with recovery periods requiring careful management. Prevention through adequate hydration — often achieved by transitioning to wet food, adding water to dry food, or using cat fountains — is far preferable to reactive treatment. Any cat showing reduced defecation frequency or signs of straining warrants prompt veterinary attention rather than watchful waiting.
