Intervertebral disc disease is extremely common in dachshunds. Conservative management is appropriate for milder cases and requires strict rest with careful monitoring for deterioration.
IVDD causes significant pain from spinal cord compression and surrounding tissue inflammation. Affected dachshunds may cry, be reluctant to move, resist being lifted, and show a characteristic hunched posture. Without appropriate management, mild episodes can progress rapidly to paralysis. Strict rest — meaning genuinely confined, not supervised loose house access — is essential but presents welfare challenges for active, social dogs. Providing enrichment within confinement, maintaining social contact, and ensuring adequate pain relief throughout the rest period are critical welfare components. Failure to enforce rest adequately is the primary cause of conservative management failure and subsequent progression to surgery or permanent disability.
