Chimpanzees are among the most welfare-demanding zoo animals because of their cognitive sophistication. Boredom, social dysfunction, and the inability to perform complex foraging behaviours cause significant psychological harm. The visible signs of poor welfare — stereotypic behaviours, self-harm, inappropriate aggression — in inadequately housed chimpanzees reflect genuine suffering rather than mere inconvenience. Progressive zoos invest heavily in foraging enrichment (puzzle feeders, buried food, termite mound analogues), social group stability, and voluntary training programmes. The ethical case for keeping chimpanzees in captivity at all is subject to increasing scrutiny, given the extent to which any facility struggles to meet their full range of needs.
