Gastrointestinal stasis is a life-threatening emergency in rabbits. Understanding prevention through diet and early recognition of signs enables prompt welfare-saving intervention.
GI stasis causes severe abdominal pain from gas accumulation and intestinal distension. Affected rabbits adopt a hunched, immobile posture and may grind their teeth — signs of significant pain that owners must recognise as emergencies rather than minor illness. The condition progresses rapidly, and delays of even a few hours can be fatal. Dietary prevention through adequate hay consumption is straightforward but requires owner commitment — pellet-heavy diets that rabbits prefer are nutritionally inadequate and predispose to stasis. Regular handling to check droppings and body condition enables early detection of the reduced gut output that precedes full stasis.
