Badger sett disturbance causes significant welfare harm. Setts are long-term structures providing thermal stability, protection from predators, and secure breeding sites for dependent cubs. Disturbance during the breeding period (February-May) when cubs are underground is particularly harmful — cubs may be directly affected by construction vibration, or mothers may abandon cubs when disturbed. Badger baiting — the deliberate persecution and fighting of badgers for entertainment — causes extreme suffering and is among the most serious wildlife crime. Apparently legal activities including farming operations and development can cause illegal disturbance if setts are not identified and protected through appropriate survey and mitigation.
