Recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis is a painful and often misunderstood condition affecting high-performance horses. Understanding triggers and management prevents repeated painful episodes.
RER causes acute, severe muscle pain during and after exercise. Horses that repeatedly experience tying-up episodes face not only physical suffering but may develop anticipatory anxiety about exercise — stopping at the yard entrance, refusing to work, or showing signs of distress before exercise begins. Recognising this behavioural change as pain-related rather than disobedience is essential for appropriate management.
