Welfare Considerations

Deer hit by vehicles rarely die instantly — many crawl injured into roadside vegetation to die slowly over hours or days. The scale of this mortality is enormous and mostly invisible to the public. Individual deer welfare is significantly compromised by injuries including fractured legs, abdominal trauma, and spinal injury that prevent the animal from surviving without intervention. Roadside deer strike casualties found alive should be reported to police or wildlife rescue for assessment.

Slow to 40mph or below when passing deer warning signs, especially at dawn and dusk
If you see a deer on the road, dip headlights and slow — bright lights cause deer to freeze
Report any injured deer at the roadside to the police (101) or a local deer stalking organisation
Support campaigns for wildlife crossing infrastructure at identified deer collision hotspots
