Sheep shearing welfare depends almost entirely on shearer skill, incentive structure, and management standards. Skilled, careful shearing with appropriate handling causes limited acute stress. Speed-based pay incentives lead to rough handling, cuts, and injuries. Mulesing represents a more fundamental welfare problem — a painful surgical procedure performed without analgesia to prevent the welfare risk of flystrike. Pain-relief options for mulesing exist and are used by some producers, but adoption is not universal. Breeding blowfly-resistant strains of sheep offers a long-term solution that avoids the procedure entirely.
