Ringworm in cats is highly contagious and can affect humans. Systemic treatment and environmental decontamination are needed for complete resolution.
Ringworm causes circular areas of hair loss, scaling and sometimes pruritus. In shelter environments it spreads rapidly and is a common cause of extended isolation for affected animals. Systemic itraconazole or terbinafine combined with twice-weekly lime sulphur dips provides the most evidence-based cure. Environmental decontamination with appropriate antifungal disinfectants is essential to break the cycle. Owner and staff education about zoonotic risk and protective measures is a key welfare and public health consideration.
