Welfare Considerations

Sun bears in captivity require complex three-dimensional environments with climbing structures, digging substrate and daily enrichment that challenges their exceptional intelligence. Bears kept in barren enclosures commonly develop stereotypic swaying and pacing. Feeding enrichment that rewards natural foraging behaviours — scatter feeding, puzzle feeders, honey logs — is especially important. Leading institutions also provide social housing where bears are behaviourally compatible, recognising the social aspects of the species.
