Navicular syndrome causes chronic forelimb lameness in horses. Advances in imaging and treatment have improved outcomes significantly beyond traditional shoeing changes.
Horses with navicular pain experience chronic low-grade to moderate lameness that affects their ability to work and engage in normal movement. Traditional management with egg-bar shoes and phenylbutazone provided variable relief. MRI diagnosis now allows targeted treatment of specific lesions — whether bone oedema, soft tissue damage or cyst formation. Bisphosphonate injections have shown significant clinical benefit in appropriate cases. Regular monitoring and workload adjustment are essential to long-term welfare management.
