Diabetes mellitus in dogs requires daily insulin injections and dietary management. With good owner training, most diabetic dogs achieve excellent quality of life.
Uncontrolled diabetes causes persistent thirst, urination, weight loss and lethargy that significantly impair quality of life. The daily injection routine, while appearing burdensome to owners, causes minimal discomfort with appropriate needle gauge and technique. Hypoglycaemia from insulin overdose represents the most acute welfare emergency — signs of weakness, trembling and collapse require immediate glucose supplementation. Regular glucose curve monitoring helps maintain regulation and prevents both hypo- and hyperglycaemia.
