Ultrasound and feline pancreatic lipase testing have transformed pancreatitis diagnosis in cats. Combining modalities improves diagnostic accuracy and guides appropriate treatment.
Accurate diagnosis of feline pancreatitis determines treatment intensity. Severe acute pancreatitis requires hospitalisation, IV fluids, aggressive pain management and nutritional support. Mild chronic pancreatitis may be manageable with outpatient care. The welfare priority is ensuring cats receive adequate pain management — inadequate analgesia in pancreatitis represents a significant welfare failure. Owner education about signs of deterioration and when to return for reassessment is critical for outpatient cases. Concurrent diseases including IBD and cholangitis must be investigated as these require separate management.
